Question:
When did the 20-Mule Borax Team come through Norwich,
N.Y.
Answer: On October 8, 1919 at 12
noon the team came to Norwich and stopped at the grocery store of H. O.
Gregory located at 58 1-2 North Broad Street. Tarrantula Pete gave a lecture
and handed out samples of Borax. Borax Bill was the famous “jerk-line”
driver of 20 mules, hauling the biggest wagons ever built. Come in and visit
the Otis A. Thompson room and read the articles that appeared in our local
newspaper. (Norwich Sun – October 4, 6, and 8, 1919 issues) You can also
read some historical history on the 20-Mule Borax Team on-line at
http://20muleteammuseum.com/history.html.
A miniature of the 20-Mule Borax Team will be on display
in the Local History room from Dec 1 - Dec 31, 2011. We invite
everyone to stop by and take a look. We thank Gail Merian for the
miniature display of the mule team.
